This super easy DIY shows you how to make a custom Christmas doormat perfect for the holidays!

I kept seeing the cutest Christmas doormats online, but they were like $30 so naturally I thought, “I can totally make that for way less!” So that’s exactly what I did. With a simple Cricut doormat stencil and some acrylic paint, you can make your own custom holiday doormat for a fraction of the price.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to make a doormat with Cricut, including how to cut the stencil, prep your mat, and paint on a clean, long-lasting design. Whether you want a festive Christmas doormat outdoor for your porch or you’re making a cute handmade gift, this DIY Cricut project is easy, budget-friendly, and completely customizable. Let’s get crafty and make a custom doormat that looks store-bought (without the hefty price tag)!

Materials to Make a Custom Doormat

  • Coconut Coir Doormat (Amazon)
  • Cricut Stencil (use code ABCRAFTY for $10 off at Cricut) – though it might be easier to use cardstock (also from Cricut)
  • Cricut Machine (use code ABCRAFTY for $10 off at Cricut)
  • Transfer Tape (Amazon)
  • Acrylic Paint (Amazon)

Instructions to Make a Custom Doormat

Make and Weed the Design

Hop into Cricut Design Space (the software used for Cricut) and make your design. Since I was specifically making a Christmas doormat and replicating the one I saw, I opted for words that embody the holidays. If you’d like to make this exact one, here’s the template.

Tip: If using text, I recommend using a stencil font so that you don’t have to worry about the placement of the inside of the letters like I did.

Send the design to your Cricut and let it do it’s thing. I used the smart stencil for this (this one), but as you saw in the video an easier option might actually be to use cardstock.

Whichever you use, weed out the letters.

Prepare the Doormat Stencil

Cover the stencil in transfer tape (this is similar to the one I used). This ensures all of the pieces that aren’t connected (e.g. the middle of the A) will still be aligned.

If you use a stencil font, this step won’t be necessary.

Remove the backing to the stencil and stick it to the coconut coir doormat (this is the one I used).

I found it helpful to tape down the stencil, but you’ll want to peel off the transfer tape.

Paint the Design

Next, take out a paint brush and acrylic paint and paint between the stencil. Make sure you saturate the mat thoroughly. It can help to push straight down with the brush, rather than side to side.

Note: I happened to use black paint for my design, but you can use whichever colors you’d like!

Then while the paint is still wet, peel off the stencil. If needed, use a weeding tool to remove the centers of the letters.

  • 1 Coconut Coir Doormat
  • Cricut Stencil
  • Transfer Tape

Instructions
 

  • Create your design in Cricut Design Space. Send it to your Cricut and cut it using Smart Stencil or cardstock. Weed out the letters.

  • Cover the stencil with transfer tape to keep the inner pieces aligned. Remove the backing and place the stencil onto the coir doormat. Secure with tape if needed, then peel off the transfer tape.

  • Use acrylic paint and a brush to dab paint straight down into the mat, fully saturating the fibers.

  • While the paint is still wet, peel off the stencil and remove any inner letter pieces.

  • Let the paint dry completely. Your custom Cricut doormat is ready to display!
