Pro Tips for the Perfect Soak

Now that we know what bath bombs do, how do you actually use them?

In my example, I’ll be using one left over from my DIY Pokemon Bath Bombs.

The easiest way to use one is simply by dropping it in the bath tub (for the sake of a better photo, the “tub” in my example is a bowl of water).

For fizziness, it doesn’t matter what the water temperature is. This is because the bath bomb will activate once it hits any moisture (which is also why you want to make sure you store them in a dry place). As you can see from the photo below, it immediately starts to fizz when it touches water.

However, if you’re worried about keeping the wonderful scent, you’ll want to keep the water temp to under 100 degrees Fahrenheit as anything hotter can “cook off” the essential oils.

Pro Tip for Maximum Fizz!: Don’t just drop the bomb in! Wait until the tub is full, then hold the bath bomb just at the surface from below. This introduces more oxygen and creates a much larger foam “show.” You also get the bonus sensation of feeling the bubbles in your hand!

From there, it will continue to fizz until completely dissolved so you have a few options:

  1. Leave it untouched and watch it swirl into different bubbly colors
  2. Break it up into smaller pieces so it dissolves more quickly
  3. (My personal favorite): Hold it from below so it’s half out of the water so you can control the fizz. With this option you also get to feel the bubbles on your hand, which I still get a kick out of every time I use one.

Once it has completely dissolved, I recommend swirling the water around. Doing so will evenly distribute all of the moisturizers that were in it.

What’s inside a bath bomb? (And why it matters)

A simple bath bomb contains, more often than not, baking soda, corn starch, citric acid, and water as a binder. The reaction between baking soda, citric acid, and water is what creates the fizz. This is why if you get a dud (a bath bomb that doesn’t fizz), its likely because the reaction already took place due to a humid environment.

Now, we of course want more than just fizz! We want amazing scents, colors, and moisturizers! Therefore most companies that sell them, such as Lush or Bath and Body Works (and your home DIYer) add additional ingredients. These include essential oils for scents and additives such as coconut oil, almond oil, and epsom salt to moisturize the skin. Additionally, they will add dyes and other fun stuff such as glitter (my favorite of course!) or dried flowers which get mixed into the water for some color and sparkle.

The benefits of a properly used bath bomb

  • The oils and salts moisturize the skin that plain water simply can’t do
  • The scents provide some nice aromatherapy – I personally love citrus scents!
  • They’re simply fun! The fizzing is a satisfying sensory activity and the swirling colors give a fun show
