For a fun summertime craft project, making homemade sidewalk chalk is a great option. It’s an activity to make it and then to use it. You can either use a custom DIY chocolate bar mold to make them look like actual bars of chocolate or shape them with a plastic bag or another mold.

Instead of using food coloring or other dyes for this DIY chalk, the recipe calls for chocolate. Therefore it specifically makes brown chalk and as an added bonus, scented chalk.

What is Chalk Made of?

Fun fact, traditional chalk is a type of limestone or calcium carbonate, created from shells within the ocean. Since neither you nor I are the ocean we are therefore unable to make traditional chalk. However, we can make a variation of DIY chalk at home using Plaster of Paris , which is made up of calcium sulfate. This is also what Crayola uses in their sidewalk chalk.

Ingredients of Chalkboard Chalk vs Sidewalk Chalk

I personally thought chalkboard and sidewalk chalks were the same, but it turns out they’re made of different materials. According to Crayola they use different materials to make the different types of chalk.

Chalkboard Chalk is made of the natural calcium carbonate made by the ocean.

Sidewalk Chalk is made of Plaster of Paris, just like this chocolate chalk recipe.

They advise that the sidewalk chalk should not be used on chalkboard, however, since the Plaster of Paris is not as fine and can scratch a chalkboard.

Step by Step Instructions to Make DIY Chocolate Sidewalk Chalk

Start by mixing together an overflowing 1/4 cup of Plaster of Paris and 1 cup of water in a disposable cup. (Note the mixture will start to bubble a little)

Tip: You want to use a disposable cup as the mixture will harden and it’ll be a pain to clean it.

Add around 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to the mixture.

Mix it together with a popsicle stick until it forms a sort of chalk paste.

You may need to add more water or Plaster of Paris to get this “creamy” texture. I personally like to think it looks kind of like chocolate soft serve ice cream.

And if you want a darker color, add in more cocoa powder until the chalk paste is the color you would like.

Get out your chocolate bar mold. I used the mold I made using a Hershey’s bar so it has the fun detailed text.

Use the popsicle stick to spread the chocolate chalk paste mixture into the mold.

Tip: Tap the mold onto the table to get out the air bubbles. It’s also a good idea when spreading the mixture into the mold to press down to the bottom of the mold. You want to make sure all the details from the mold show up!

Another option if you want to make more traditional sticks of chalk is to pour the mixture into a plastic bag and push it to the bottom.

Then roll the rest of the bag around it to hold its shape.

Let them dry overnight and then very carefully remove them from the molds.

And I say very carefully remove them from the molds, because I quickly broke this one trying to take photos.

But not a problem, I just used that piece to write with. And it’s frankly pretty cool that the pieces break off just like a real chocolate bar.

But you can of course also use it as a full bar.
